Dr. Joshua K Pritchard
Dr. Joshua Pritchard is a fierce advocate for our science and the profession of behavior analysis. He published his first paper on licensure over 10 years ago and was involved in the first successful licensure of ABA a decade ago. He is currently leading a state-wide advocacy effort to maintain access and service provision to children (regardless of diagnosis) throughout Florida. He has been invited to present locally and internationally on topics ranging from ethics, scope of practice and how ACT/RFT fits into the BA service delivery model. As a contextual behavior scientist, he is eager to see ACT-infused behavior analysis and yearns for the days that ACT principles are part of the core curriculum for all behavior analysts. Until then, he wants to make sure that our profession moves forward safely.

This webinar will help the practitioner understand the utility of RFT and ACT for their practice without stepping outside of scope and competency.  During this webinar, discussions will explore the boundaries of our scope, how to detect when situations in practice abut such boundaries, and how to move forward without crossing.  Using a functional contextualist (radical behaviorism) framework, participants will be led through the points and counterpoints of how behavior analytic practice should integrate complex language in their interventions.  There will be examples of practitioners moving beyond their scope and discussion of the consequences of such behavior. Additionally, participants will learn the appropriate means to either expand competency, or recruit sufficient support to maintain appropriate practice.   

Learning Objectives:

  • Ability to detect the edges of one’s competency
  • Ability to identify means to expand competency or recruit appropriate support
  • Name three ways that a behavior analytic practitioner could easily cross into another field’s scope
  • Identify three solutions to protect against this inadvertent scope creep
  •  Describe how one should and could integrate complex language into their practice

Dr. Joshua K Pritchard earned his doctorate from the University of Nevada-Reno. He has founded several behavior analytic companies, helped launch and grow academic programs and is a BCBA-D (Board Certified Behavior Analyst-Doctorate). He has served on the executive council of the Association for Behavior Analysis International, president of the Association for Science in Autism Treatment, and the president of Tennessee Association for Behavior Analysis.  He is currently serving as the Associate Editor for scientific behavioral journals such as Behavior Analysis in Practice & Behavior Analysis: Research & Practice. Dr. Pritchard has provided behavioral services, assessments, and consultation to school, residential settings, in-home, and in-center settings for just under two decades and is the founder of a school for children with behavior disorders, a behavior-analytic clinic and this year is opening learning labs across five states. In addition to his entrepreneurial development, he has provided consultation to a variety of agencies across the country and internationally using Applied Behavior Analysis and Organizational Behavior Management.
