Students with emotional and behavioral disorders often experience poor academic and social outcomes in school. These outcomes lead to a variety of difficulties later in life, which include high rates of dropping out, unemployment, and difficulties with relationships. Developing interventions for adolescents with EBD is a difficult task. However, this particular age range does provide for an opportunity to change the trajectory of student outcomes. Effective programming for this group must include assessment, as well as interventions that can be implemented in general education settings, where students with EBD spend the majority of their school time. In this two-part workshop, you will learn about behavioral assessment, prevention, and intervention strategies to help support students with EBD/at risk for EBD in general education settings.
PART 1 Learning Objectives:
After completing this workshop:
- You will be able to describe the academic, social, and behavioral difficulties experienced by students with EBD.
- You will be able to describe methods to assess function of student behavior, as well as assess the social context of the classroom.
- You will be able to describe interventions to increase academic engagement, which include instructional modifications and direct instruction.
PART 2 Learning Objectives:
After completing this workshop:
- You will be able to describe interventions that increase appropriate classroom behavior.
- You will be able to develop interventions that leverage the social dynamics that occur in classrooms in order to increase appropriate social functioning.
- You will be able to describe methods to support and train general education teachers in their efforts to help students with EBD.

David Lee is a Professor in the Special Education program at Penn State University. The main focus of his research is to develop, evaluate, and disseminate programs to support students with or at risk for emotional/behavior disorders (EBD) across academic, behavioral, and social domains. His research draws upon a behavior analytic framework to create positive, function-based interventions for students, primarily in middle/high school settings.
