Feeding problems in children with and without special needs are common and depending on the severity of the feeding problem, may cause serious health risks for a child.  Further, a family of a child with feeding problems often experiences very stressful mealtimes and frustration over how to help their child overcome his or her feeding problem.  The focus of this workshop will be to review food selectivity and food refusal and evidence-based behavioral interventions for treating them.  In addition, evidence-based training packages for teaching caregivers how to implement interventions with their children will be discussed.

Learning Objectives:

After attending this event:

  • Participants will be able to describe ways to assess food selectivity and food refusal using both direct and indirect measures.
  • Participants will be able to describe ways to implement numerous evidence-based behavioral interventions available for treating food selectivity and food refusal in children.
  • Participants will be able to describe ways to use behavioral skills training and general-case training to teach caregivers to implement feeding interventions with their children.

Dr. Laura Seiverling is a NY state licensed Psychologist and Board Certified Behavior Analyst-Doctoral Level (BCBA-D). She holds a doctorate in Learning Processes and Behavior Analysis from the Graduate Center (City University of New York).  Dr. Seiverling currently works as the Clinical Supervisor and Behavioral Psychologist at St. Mary’s Hospital for Children’s Center for Pediatric Feeding Disorders in Bayside, NY.  Dr. Seiverling has over 10 years of experience providing applied behavior analysis (ABA) treatment for feeding and other behaviors in children with autism spectrum disorder and other developmental disabilities. She has published over 20 articles and book chapters in the areas of feeding problems, staff and parent training, and behavioral interventions of those with autism spectrum disorder.

Dr. Seiverling is co-author of the ebook Broccoli Boot Camp:  A Guide For Improving Your Child’s Selective Eating which will be mentioned in the presentation.  A number of interventions mentioned in the workshop are also described in detail in the book.  Dr. Seiverling receives royalties from the sales of the book.
