For many of us, completing our daily self-care routines requires little to no thought. We do them every day, day after day, month after month with relatively the same level of accuracy. For many individuals with autism, such daily routines require careful development, practice, refinement, and monitoring. The rate of progress towards self-sufficiency varies greatly from individual to individual. However, the goal remains the same: to be as independent as possible! The ability to take care of oneself can greatly impact and improve the quality of life for that individual as well as their caregivers. This presentation will present research-based strategies that can lead to independence during self-care routines across the age span, from toddlers, to teenagers and into adulthood.
- Participants will be able to identify skill deficits in learners with autism in regards to self-care routines.
2. Participants will be able to identify skills to teach in order to increase independence during self-care routines.
3. Participants will be able to identify and describe techniques to use in order to teach learners with autism to be independent in the completion of self-care routines.

Kelly Della Rosa is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst and Clinical Services Coordinator at Alpine Learning Group. She earned her Master’s degree in Applied Behavior Analysis from Caldwell University. Kelly has been supporting individuals with autism in educational, employment, and home settings since 2008. In her current role, she oversees and provides a variety of clinical services including skill-based and behavioral assessments, school consultation, and parent training to families. Kelly serves on the New Jersey Association for Behavior Analysis Board of Directors as a Representative-at-Large and is currently a Subject Matter Expert for the Behavior Analyst Certification Board. She is active in research and has published research on stimulus control of problem behavior. She has presented at many local and national conferences on a variety of topics including; assessing and reducing problem behavior, vocational preferences, transitioning to adulthood, and equivalence-based instruction.
