Aspiring entrepreneurs have a great deal to navigate when they start their own business. Anecdotally, many behavioral health practitioners who have set out to achieve the dream of business or practice ownership report finding that their intentions for starting a business in the first place became a barrier, preventing them from achieving professional goals as well as partnering, parenting and/or self-care goals. Join Adrienne Fitzer as she talks about the realities of business ownership, including the positive and not so positive, describes barriers reported by globally by various practitioners turned entrepreneurs, and openly discusses her own failures and self-defined success. Ethical codes from the organizations that ABAC, Inc. represents as a continuing education provider/sponsor will be used to create a framework for ethical business ownership and participants will be given the opportunity to ask questions and share experiences.
1) Describe why a foundation in professional ethics can be helpful to entrepreneurs who are also behavioral/mental health professionals starting or running a business or practice.
2) List common goals that are often stated as being reasons for starting a new business and evaluate whether owning a business or being independent contractor is best suited to achieving those goals.
3) Describe job role functions crucial to business ownership that can become barriers to clinical practice and/or personal goals if not addressed.
4) Refer to sections of various ethical codes to guide decision making, marketing, hiring, scheduling, and other business decisions.

Adrienne Fitzer, M.A., BCBA, started in the field working with students with autism in the Washington, D.C. area over 20 years ago as an undergraduate majoring in psychology at the University of Maryland. After graduating Phi Beta Kappa, she continued working in the field and attended the Learning Processes Sub-Doctoral Program in Psychology at the Graduate Center and Queens College of the City University of New York. She holds a Masters Degree from Queens College in Psychology, and, as of publication of this bio, is the only registered Board Certified Behavior Analyst in Union County, NJ to hold the certification since 2003. In 2017, Adrienne went back to finish her doctorate and is currently working on her dissertation under the advisement of Bertram O. Ploog, PhD, LBA, BCBA. She hopes to finish her doctorate within in 20 years of starting :).
Ms. Fitzer completed her doctoral course work, on campus, in the Learning Processes Program offered by the Graduate Center, City University of New York at Queens College which at the time was one of few programs in the world accredited by the Association for Behavior Analysis International. As a doctoral student, Adrienne was a recipient of a teaching fellowship, a research fellowship, co-chaired on campus conferences, and spent much of her time working with Dr. Lanny Fields in his stimulus equivalence research lab.
Ms. Fitzer has co-edited two books on ABA and Autism, Autism Spectrum Disorders: Applied Behavior Analysis, Evidence and Practice (2007, 2013) and Language and Autism: Applied Behavior Analysis, Evidence and Practice (2009). Her research is published in the Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior and she has presented on behavior analysis at conferences and workshops.
From 2006-2012, Adrienne Fitzer provided quality applied behavior analysis services to children with autism in public schools. In 2011, Ms. Fitzer realized that she could combine her passion for teaching applied behavior analysis and working with those who care for and work with learners with autism and related disorders by focusing on parent and professional training. She opened The Applied Behavior Analysis Center (ABAC) in 2013 to achieve that professional dream. Her current interests (outside of her dissertation research) include ethical behavior of professionals who have, or who are, developing an internet presence, efficient but accurate data collection, ethical business ownership, and online consumer behavior.
