Verbal behavior has long been of interest to behavior analysis via Skinner’s taxonomy, rule governance, and more recently, derived stimulus relations. An interesting aspect of language is how incredibly pervasive this repertoire is—truly, humans language near constantly, however behavior analysis has long held to the belief that languaging offers little more than connection to our external experience via labeling, requesting, recording, and extending. With the development of RFT and an understanding of the impact of derived stimulus relations, the focus on languaging as a behavioral event that may alter other behavioral events has improved our understanding of human behavior. In this, it is observed that stimulation produced via verbal behavior may function both as appetitive and aversive stimulation. One area of particular interest is in the capacity of language to direct behavior sans experiencing direct contingencies as is seen in the area of ‘Values’. Values, as per an ACT account are verbally constructed consequences of ongoing and evolving patterns of activity that establish (verbal) reinforcers which are intrinsic to the behavior itself. Given the potential for both reinforcing and aversive functions to exist with those we work, it is imperative that behavior analysts come to better understand the motivative functions inherent in languaging. This workshop will unpack languaging in the context of values and how a focus on relational responding may improve our ability to affect positive change with parent implementation of parenting skills.
At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
1) Identify typical traps that parents get caught in when working with their children.
2) Identify active components of verbal behavior that may function as barriers to engaging in parenting techniques, and/or future oriented intangible reinforcers.
3) Identify behavior analytic components of a values based approach to training parents
This webinar is 3 hours long. It begins with a short intro and the presenter starts speaking soon after. At the end of the event, participants are required to submit an evaluation, take and pass a post-test and submit attendance codes.

Dr. Timothy Weil has been involved in the practice of behavior analysis since 1993 when working in the area of traumatic brain injury rehabilitation while completing his undergraduate degree from Florida State. Upon graduation he invested his time and training in learning how to help children who presented with varying behavioral issues and academic difficulties. Dr. Weil attended graduate school at the University of Nevada, Reno. While at UNR, Dr. Weil focused his training on all things pediatric and acquired expertise in working with children of varying diagnoses, as well as pediatric presenting problems and academic learning difficulties. Upon graduating with his Ph.D. in psychology, Dr. Weil taught in graduate behavior analysis programs at both the Florida State University and University of South Florida. Additionally, he ran the early childhood autism program at FSU and served as program coordinator for both graduate programs. He continues to teach as adjunct professor while building a program in Behavioral pediatrics. His teaching extended from practical applications to conceptual basis of behavior analysis. His focus was always in bringing science to practice when shaping his students clinical skills. Dr. Weil has conducted hundreds of presentations at state, national, and international conferences. He has been an invited speaker on various topics and conducts workshops on languaging via derived stimulus relations. Additionally, Dr. Weil has published book chapters and research articles in a variety of journals. He currently serves as Associate Editor of the Journal of Contextual Behavioral Science, continues to work clinically, and continues as a graduate professor.
